Turf Tools is software that community and political organizations use to run canvassing operations: a web application for organizers and a mobile app for canvassers. The software runs on deployments, each run by an operator: we operate some deployments, and third parties — including organizations hosting the software for themselves — operate others. Each organization is hosted on a single deployment. Information recorded through the app goes to the deployment hosting the organization whose access code you used, and belongs to that organization. This policy describes what information the software handles and how.
Information we collect
- Organizer accounts (web). A name and email address, used to sign in and to identify you within your organization.
- Canvassers (mobile app). The app is used with an access code provided by an organization — no account is created. Canvassers are required to provide a name and a phone number so the organization can attribute canvassing activity to them and contact them if necessary.
- Canvassing activity. Responses and outcomes recorded while canvassing. This information is collected on behalf of the organization running the campaign and belongs to that organization.
- Location. The mobile app can use your device's location to show your position on the map while you canvass. Location is used on your device only and is not stored on any servers.
- Voter and constituent data. Organizations import data they are entitled to use, such as voter files. The Turf Tools web application processes data on an organization's behalf and the mobile app renders it; the organization controls it. Questions about this data should be directed to the organization.
How we use information
Solely to provide the service: signing organizers in, running canvassing operations, and showing organizations their own campaign activity. The software shows no advertising and includes no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and we never sell personal information. On deployments we operate, data is shared only with the infrastructure providers that run them, who process it on our instructions and are bound to protect it, or as required by law. On deployments operated by others, the operator's own infrastructure and practices govern the data.
Retention and deletion
Organizations control their own data and can update or delete it. To ask about data connected to you, contact the organization you canvassed with, or email us at the address below.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit, and access is limited to the organization that owns it.
Children
Turf Tools is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes and contact
We may update this policy as the service evolves; changes will be posted on this page. Questions: support@turf.tools.
